The Gazette of Medical Sciences was developed around a simple principle: rigorous scholarly publication and effective scholarly communication serve related but different purposes. The journal therefore seeks to protect the standards expected of peer-reviewed publishing while continuing to explore responsible ways in which published knowledge can be communicated and discovered.
Scholarly publishing should establish a credible record of knowledge. Scholarly communication should help that knowledge continue its journey.
Our mission is to provide a responsible, efficient and author-focused platform for the publication of scholarly work across medical, biomedical, health and related interdisciplinary fields.
We seek to combine appropriate editorial assessment, peer review, ethical publishing practices, open access and clear author communication with opportunities for continued communication of published work.
In doing so, The GMS aims to support both the integrity of the published record and the ability of readers to encounter relevant scholarly ideas in useful formats.
Our vision is to contribute to a publishing environment in which scholarly rigor and modern research communication strengthen rather than compete with one another.
We envision The GMS as an increasingly international and interdisciplinary journal that develops meaningful academic collaborations, strengthens its discoverability and publishing infrastructure, and provides authors with a thoughtful pathway from publication to wider scholarly communication.
The long-term objective is not simply to publish more material, but to develop a journal in which credible scholarship, responsible communication and continuing visibility form parts of the same scholarly ecosystem.
These principles define how the journal intends to develop while maintaining publication as its scholarly foundation.
Editorial assessment and peer review remain central to the evaluation of manuscripts considered for publication.
The journal seeks transparent, responsible publishing practices and clear policies for authors, reviewers and editors.
Published scholarship should be accessible to readers without unnecessary barriers to reading the journal's open content.
Clear communication throughout the editorial and publication journey is an important part of the author experience.
Important questions in health and medicine increasingly cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Communication beyond the article should preserve the relationship with the underlying scholarly work rather than replace it.
The GMS will continue to develop its international collaborations, journal discoverability, editorial infrastructure and approaches to scholarly communication. Growth will be pursued alongside the journal's continuing responsibility to authors, readers, reviewers and the integrity of the published scholarly record.
