About the Department

Science, Society, and Public Affairs

The Department of Public Interest explores contemporary issues at the intersection of health, science, society, technology and public policy. It provides a platform for perspectives, commentary, critical analysis, observations and public-awareness articles that may fall outside conventional scientific article categories but contribute meaningfully to public understanding and discussion.

The Department recognizes that important questions often emerge from professional experience, public observations, ethical concerns, technological developments and the consequences of institutional decisions. Such questions may merit serious examination even when they do not originate from a conventional laboratory or clinical study.

Contributions are encouraged to present clearly reasoned arguments, distinguish verifiable evidence from interpretation, and engage constructively with differing viewpoints. The Department welcomes critical perspectives without requiring agreement with any particular political, commercial or ideological position.

Aims

The primary aim of the Department of Public Interest is to encourage meaningful communication on issues that influence public understanding, institutional responsibility, professional practice and everyday life. It seeks to connect knowledge, experience and informed perspectives with wider public discussion.

The Department aims to provide space for well-articulated viewpoints that examine emerging concerns, question prevailing assumptions, explore ethical dilemmas and consider the social implications of scientific and technological developments. Contributions should help readers understand why an issue matters, what evidence is available and which questions remain unresolved.

It also encourages professionals, researchers, clinicians, independent thinkers and members of the wider public to communicate ideas responsibly. Authors are invited to draw upon relevant experience while remaining transparent about the limits of their evidence, their interpretations and any competing explanations.

By supporting informed dialogue, the Department seeks to broaden participation in public-interest writing while maintaining standards of clarity, attribution, accountability and editorial integrity.

Scope

The Department welcomes contributions examining the relationship between science, healthcare, technology, institutions, public policy and society. Its scope is intentionally broader than conventional biomedical research, allowing well-reasoned perspectives on issues of public significance.

Authors may explore established practices, emerging concerns, competing interpretations, ethical questions, regulatory developments, public communication and the consequences of decisions affecting individuals and communities.

The Surveillance Panopticon: Data Centers, Corporate Fascism, and the Death of History

In this perspective, Dr. Moore critically examines the expansion of large-scale data centers and their possible implications for surveillance, privacy, public infrastructure and institutional accountability. Drawing on historical comparisons and contemporary developments, he argues that relationships between technological corporations and government institutions deserve greater public scrutiny. The article also discusses environmental resources, information control and the preservation of individual autonomy.

They’re Watching Everything You Do. Unless They Don’t Want To.

This perspective examines the use of surveillance technologies in contemporary law enforcement, including license-plate readers, cameras and electronic information systems. Dr. Moore questions how such tools are deployed, whether safeguards are consistently applied and how technological capabilities may affect privacy, due process and public confidence in institutions. The article presents a critical argument about the relationship between surveillance, accountability and individual rights.
